It’s that time of year to Stamp Out Hunger! Please mark your calendars for the annual National Letter Carrier Food Drive, Stamp Out Hunger, to be held on Saturday, May 14, 2016. Every second Saturday in May, letter carriers in more than 10,000 cities and towns across America collect the goodness and compassion of their postal customers, who participate in this national food drive — the largest one-day food drive in the country. This drive is one of the easiest ways to support the Wakefield Interfaith Food Pantry (WIFP). The concept behind the drive is simple: you leave non-perishable food donations at your mailbox—and the letter carriers take care of the rest. The National Letter Carriers Association collects millions of pounds of food to help restock food banks, pantries and shelters around the country.
As we approach what will hopefully be a beautiful, sunny summer, for many Wakefield residents, particularly families with children, the summer months represent continued periods of food insecurity. Children are most vulnerable at this time when many do not have access to free or discounted breakfast and lunch provided by school meal programs. The Food Pantry relies on the Stamp Out Hunger drive to help stock its shelves and get ready for the summer months when food donations and drives tend to decrease.
“We’d like to thank the dedicated letter carriers in Wakefield for participating in this drive, our generous Wakefield community as well as the many volunteers who help unload and sort the food donations for the pantry,” comments Maureen Miller, Director of the WIFP.
A list of most needed items include:
